This one-day conference aims to raise awareness of the importance of spoken language skills in higher education, explore ways of embedding oracy skills in learning and teaching and create a network of interested practitioners and researchers.


The one-day conference will be held at the University of Surrey in Guildford. The conference follows on from the highly successful conference on “The Power of Talk” held at Hughes Hall, Cambridge University in April 2016. The conference talks and breakout session will explore the range of oracy demands on students in higher education, discuss ways of embedding oracy skills-rich activities into the higher education curriculum, and consider the role of university staff in modelling and developing oracy skills. The day will comprise of both plenary sessions and small group discussion sessions.



Free parking and lunch is included.  Tea / Coffee / Biscuits will be provided throughout the day.

Registration / tea & coffee from 9:30am

Conference timings 10am – 4:30pm
