A Level Dance Study Day: Optional area of study, named practitioner Jasmin Vardimon

Date: Sunday 8th October

Venue: University of Surrey, Ivy Arts Centre

Led by: Jasmin Vardimon Company Members.

A comprehensive study day for A Level Dance teachers that offers both practical approaches to exploring the technique, style and movement vocabulary as well as an experiential understanding of the creative methodology and choreographic process used by Jasmin Vardimon.

This day will look at the work of Jasmin Vardimon, one of the named practitioners for the optional area of study The independent contemporary dance scene in Britain, 2000-current. The day will provide contextual information on the creation of Vardimon’s work, exploring her influences, working methods, collaborative processes and key stylistic features in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of her work as appropriate to the AQA A-level Dance specification.  Practical work will focus on Pinocchio with teachers learning key repertory and engaging in creative exploration that can be used with their students.

Course Description

The course will focus on analysis and key characteristics of Appalachian Spring, one of the optional set works for the new A Level Dance specification. The day will include a Graham-based technique class, an outline analysis, and consideration of the dance in the context of other work choreographed by Graham. It will also provide ideas for theoretical and practical tasks to support the delivery of Appalachian Spring.

Closing dates for applications: Please note that closing dates for courses are ten days prior to the date of the course. Early application is advised to avoid disappointment as places are limited and allocated on a first-come-first-served basis.

Course Timings: Unless otherwise indicated in course confirmation details all courses start with registration at 10.15am, teaching begins at 10.30am and the day finishes at 4.30pm.

 Bookings: telephone reservations cannot be accepted. We can only reserve you a place if we receive an online booking or completed application form with appropriate payment or invoice details by the closing date and if the course is not full. Places will be reserved on completion and receipt of an application form and payment. Places are limited and allocated on a first-come-first-served basis so you are advised to book early to avoid disappointment, especially for set work and set dance days.

 Cancellation: If you withdraw before the closing date, a 25% administrative fee will be retained. If you withdraw on or after the closing date or are unable to attend a course, for any reason including illness, injury, bad weather or travel problems, no refund will be made. If for any reason the NRCD has to cancel the course, your fee will be refunded in full. The NRCD reserves the right to cancel any courses which are under-subscribed or where other factors necessitate cancellation.

 Loss or Injury: no responsibility is accepted by theUniversity ofSurrey or the organisers of the day for any loss of property or personal injury. Participants are, therefore, advised to arrange their own insurance against accident, injury and loss of personal property.
