Detailed Description

One of Ashton’s most loved creations and a tribute to his beloved Suffolk countryside. The ballet centres on a young couple Lise and Colas (danced by Carlos Acosta and Marianella Nuñez) who are determined to thwart the plans of the Widow Simone to marry off her daughter to Alain, the simple son of a wealth farmer. This humorous ballet about country life, complete with haywain, pony, maypole and a clog dance, is set to John Lanchberry’s arrangement of Ferdinand Hérold’s score and within Osbert Lancaster’s colourful stage designs.
