This course has a dual aim: a) to provide an overview on discourse analysis as a qualitative method in the service of analysing qualitative data (discourse) and b) to focus on using discourse analysis in practice. The course is focused on the analysis of discourse and also on the reasons for opting for discursive approaches while considering the assumptions they entail.

Course Description

The course is addressed to participants with some understanding of discourse analysis, who wish to advance their discourse analytic skills and practice analysing data using discourse analysis. 

Through a combination of some introductory theoretical points and analytic foci, and, subsequently, practical sessions/workshops, we will cover certain approaches to discourse analysis (as well as the main principles and key literatures), illustrate analytic tools through the use of examples, and engage in hands-on analysis.

The course will engage you in evaluations of discourse-analytic approaches, and offer you the opportunity to develop your practical skills in applying discourse analysis. The course aims to develop a critical understanding of discourse analytic approaches, in order for you to select them appropriately in the future. Finally, the course aims to provide a development of your skills so that you can practice and apply discourse analysis independently.
